Small business, big problem? The cyber security support challenge for SMEs
Most cyber security threats have the potential to be encountered regardless of the size of organisations involved. However, the organisation’s ability to face and manage the resulting challenges can vary significantly, with larger organisations often being better positioned in terms of related expertise and resources with which to respond. In contrast, smaller businesses can find themselves at a corresponding disadvantage, with potential difficulties in understanding the issues and where to look for support. This presentation examines the nature of the challenge, looking at the nature of online guidance that small and medium-sized enterprises can find if they seek to support themselves, alongside related insights drawn directly from small businesses and those that they may turn to for support. It also considers the potential for an additional level of support that may be enabled via the establishment of cyber security communities of support, in which enabling small businesses and cyber advisors can share experiences in a community-based context.
